The book My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln and Christopher Collier is about the Meeker family and their hardships living in the 18th century. It starts out when Sam Meeker, the sixteen-year-old brother of Tim Meeker, comes home wearing the uniform of the Continental Soldier. Tim and Sam's father, Eliphalet (Life) is a Tory, or a Loyalist, and disagrees with the fight Sam is putting up for the freedom of the colonies. Sam and Eliphalet end up disagreeing over several things in the course of the book, but a major turning point when Eliphalet kicks Sam out of the house/tavern since they disagree over loyalties. Once kicked out, Sam only comes back for very occasional visits. One time, he came home to steal the Brown Bess, the family's gun! He needed it for the war, and soon disappears with it. The course of the book is Tim's hardships dealing with the war and the falling incomes, and without an older brother. In the 1700's, the Revolutionary War is at full blast, the only money coming in little slips that were virtually nothing. Livestock and goods were scarce. And when Tim and Sam's father Life is taken by cowboys, how does the family cope? How does Tim cope being the only man of the house? Where is Sam and how is he doing?
"He was wearing a scarlet coat with silver buttons and a white vest and black leggings halfway up to his knees."

This was a simple quote that intrigued me, piqued my interest a bit.
So here we go, delving into the interesting subject of none other than uniforms!
